Our Permissions Update, a major revamp to the existing permissions system, is now live! We have had many requests for more control over permissions, and this update now puts a lot more power in your hands with how you want your users to be able to access your site.

Account Types
Different Account Types have been added. An Account type describes the type of user visiting your site, such as a Guest or Member, and they have a set of default permissions you can configure. For example the Guest is restricted only to viewing content, but you can now choose which content on your site they can view.

Here is a screenshot for editing the Guest Account:

For now there are only two account types: Guest and Member, but in the future we will be adding at least two more, which are Applicant (for members who have applied to your site, so you can grant them certain permissions, such as being able to view their own application), and Networked Member (which is for members from a Networked Site, such as an Alliance, which is an upcoming feature)

Customizable Permission Roles
A Permission Role is a set of permissions that you can assign to your users and ranks.

How the permissions system used to work is we created several permission roles for you, which were Guest, User, Trusted User, Moderator, Admin and Super Admin. They had certain permissions enabled and we allowed you some flexibility in declaring additional permissions to them as well, but they were not customizable and you could not create your own.

With this update, now you can! Permission Roles are now completely customizable and contain all of the possible permissions for your site so you can go very detailed with your permissions if you like. Now you can do things such as create a Banker role that has special permissions to the bank without also having to hand out admin priviledges to other sections of your site.

Here is a screenshot for editing a Permission Role:

Customizable View Levels
A View Level is an additional view/use restriction placed on certain content on your site, such as a forum thread. Previously they were wrapped into the Permission role, but as those are now customizable, so are the view levels.

There are 6 different view levels you can name, by default they are Guest, User, Trusted User, Moderator, Admin and Super Admin; which match the default roles. You can rename them to anything you like.

Please note that view levels are ordered, meaning that someone with View Level 5 can view any content from View Levels 0-5; and someone with View Level 3 can view any content from levels 0-3 but cannot see content from levels 4-5.

Sounds fantastic! Will I need to review permissions to make sure nothing has gone haywire and changed due to the update, or will everything remain the same from the old system?

All of your permissions are exactly as they were, you can just customize them now =)

Any of the optional permissions we allowed you to enable were carried over to this update, so everything should be as it was; if you do notice any issues please do send us an email though.

First off, wonderful job with the revamp this will allow for a lot of options. Having said that however, I would like to see so customizations to specific users' permissions. I have a few members who are in charge of specific functions (i.e. the banks and events) that are not required or allowed to other members of equal ranking. It would help to have a person have access solely to the bank and DKP systems. I would also like to see an option to limit certain users to specific forums. We have a family RP guild but have adult members who would like to write RP with an R-rated flavor. Obviously, this poses a problem with allowing a forum like that to exist. Guild Portal, another guild hosting site, allows this and I would like to see this be an option with MMO Guildsites. That's my 2cp.

Hi Voldran,

You can setup a person to have access to solely the bank and dkp systems if you like; to do this you can create a new permission role, called say Banker, that grants only the Bank Admin permission and no others; then a member with that role would have your standard member permissions + that bank permission; similarly you could create a DKP Admin role, and grant it only the DKP Admin permission. You could then assign those permission roles to who needs them.

Is that what you meant?

Allowing more restrictions to the forums is something we plan to add, we looked at it for this update by allowing you to restrict forums to permission roles, but using that method only posed some problems (if you delete a permission role it would open up the forum to be viewable by anyone). Having the view levels guarantees a certain amount of restriction even with no permission roles set; but we will likely add further restriction options you can use, to require you to have a certain role or rank to view a forum also, that you can set in the future =)

I'm having a problem with my forums at the moment. Certain forums were set to specific permission/rank levels, and this morning I discovered that all of my forums were viewable to all of my users!

Hi Agho'Linn,

On your suncrown site, you had incorrectly set your member account to have view level 5, this had granted all your members permission to view all of your forums.

It unfortunately seems a few members are confusing the Account Types, Permission Roles and View Levels part of this update.. we have found a few members are clicking edit on the Member Account and using the View Level dropdown at the top thinking that is switching the permissions; that is not switching the permissions, that is setting the view level.

To try to make this clearer we have moved the View Level below the permissions table in the popup and added a label to it saying it is only a view level; we have also set new sites to have different names for view levels to make it clearer they are view levels only.

Just a quick note, as a few members were confusing View Levels and Permission Roles as part of this update, we have made a few changes to try and make them more clear, and we have sent out a system message to all site owners with more info about this update.

If anyone has any questions or feedback about this update please send us an email - staff@mmoguildsites.com

Okay well... me and my entire guild must just be totally stupid, because we can't make this whole thing work.

First of all, if you have a "user" who is a probationary member, you have to turn off both View and Use Polls -- or they can see their own vote.

Unfortunately, that then keeps them from seeing ANY polls -- such as "what colour do you want to paint your house this week", and anything else.

Second, what used to be "Trusted Member" with access to viewing and using polls can no longer VOTE on anything -- such as probationary member application threads. I've tried everything I can think of including having people log off and back on after I supposedly "fixed" this on the admin side, and hey guess what, I am still the only member of my guild who can VOTE in a poll.

I've read everything on this blog, and I've tried trial-and-error, to include deleting and re-adding ranks, levels, whatever... And we can't make this work.

I need to know how to do the following things....

Have Guest access that lets non-members see the "General" forum, and fill in an application;

Have User access that lets an accepted applicant view all fora other than Applicant forum and Officer forum, and see all polls EXCEPT polls in those two fora;

Have Trusted Member access that lets a full member view all fora other than Officer area, and see all polls except polls in that forum;

Have Moderator access that lets Officers view all fora and all polls;

Have Admin or SuperAdmin access that lets the Guild Leaders, Raid Leader, and Points Officer do any damn thing they want, anywhere on the site (except what is restricted to me as Owner)

Now.... as I said, I read the above instructions, and can't make this happen. What now?

Thanks!

Hi Allannaa,

I have sent you an answer to your post here to your email address, as I did not want to post information specific to your guild here.

I hope it helps to answer your questions and if you need anything further please let me know =)
